Training groups vs registration groups

Last updated 2026-08-28
Coaches · People The two kinds of groups in Commit, what each controls, and how to move swimmers between them.

Why there are two

A registration group answers “what did this family buy?” It’s attached to your programs and pricing. A training group answers “which lane and practice plan?”. They often share names, but keeping them separate means you can shuffle practice squads all season without ever touching a family’s billing, and vice versa.

Both appear as columns on People → Roster, and both work as filters in messaging, meets, and reports.

Step by step

Move swimmers between groups

  1. Open People → Roster and select the swimmers.
  2. Click Change training group or Change reg. group in the bulk bar and pick the destination. For one swimmer, you can also open their Manage page and change them on the Training Groups and Registration Groups cards there.
  3. Changing a registration group does not change what the family is billed. Billing follows their program enrollment (see customers and billing accounts).

Manage the training groups themselves

  1. Open Training → Groups for the full group manager: create groups, archive old ones, and organize each group’s coaches, subgroups, and workout vocabulary (strokes, intensities, courses, equipment).

    The Groups manager under Training

  2. New Group creates one; each group’s menu has Edit, Archive, Copy settings, and Add yourself (put yourself on the groups you coach so they surface first when writing workouts).

Manage registration groups

  1. Registration groups are defined by your programs. Edit them where the program is set up, under Payments → Programs.

Common questions

A swimmer shows “No Active Training Group(s)”. They were never placed after joining. Select them on the roster and Change training group.

Can a swimmer be in two training groups? Yes, that’s common for swimmers who float between squads. They’ll appear in both groups’ workouts and attendance.

Which group controls what a family pays? Neither directly. Billing follows the program enrollment. The registration group labels who belongs to which program tier.
