Build relays with the relay builder

Last updated 2026-10-27
Coaches · Meets Build a meet's relays in the full-screen relay builder: place swimmers by dragging or clicking, auto-fill the fastest or most even relays, check and type the times auto-fill uses, and set seeds, heats, lanes and alternates.

Before you start

  • You need to be able to edit meets on your team. Coaches who can only view meets can open the builder but can’t change the relays.
  • The Swimmers list shows invited swimmers who fit the event’s age group and gender, plus younger swimmers who can swim up. Anyone already on a relay in the event shows too. When your meet is linked and entries are combined, the other teams’ swimmers show too, each with a team tag.
  • Times come from each swimmer’s best times. A medley relay uses the stroke for each leg. A free relay uses the leg distance.

Step by step

Open the relay builder

  1. Open the meet from Meets and click Entries. Pick Relays in the view picker.
  2. Click Open relay builder to start on the first relay event. Or click any relay event in the list (or its pencil, Edit relays) to open the builder on that event.
  3. From the Grid view you can get there too. Click the relay cell of a swimmer who is on a relay and choose Open relay builder. The bolt in a relay column’s header (Auto-generate fastest relays) opens the builder with Auto-fill ready for that event.
  4. The builder covers the page. The left panel lists the relay events by day, with the letters of each event’s relays. A solid letter has all four legs set. A dashed letter is missing legs. Close the builder with the X at the top right.

Start an event: How many relays?

  1. An event with no relays opens on How many relays? It says how many swimmers are ready to swim and how many full relays that makes.
  2. Pick A, A–B, A–C or A–D, or open More for up to A–L. A count shows in orange when you don’t have enough ready swimmers to fill it.
  3. Click Fill A–B with the fastest (the label follows your pick) to build the relays from your fastest committed swimmers. Or click Create empty to get empty relays and fill them yourself.

Find the swimmers you want

  1. Ready to swim shows swimmers committed to this session. A swimmer from a linked team counts as ready when they’re committed on their own team’s meet. Everyone adds the rest of the invited swimmers who fit. Use Search swimmers to find a name.
  2. Each row shows the swimmer’s age and times. Free relays show the leg distance and twice it (50 and 100 for a 200 free relay), so a fast 100 swimmer with no 50 still stands out. Medley relays show all four strokes. Click a column header to sort by it, or Name to sort by name.
  3. A chip such as A · 2nd leg (or B · Breast on a medley) shows where a swimmer is already swimming. The note under the name can say Swim-up, and in orange, No response, Other session, Declined or At entry limit.
  4. Click Advanced options for filter chips with counts: Committed, Swim-ups, No response, Other sessions, Declined and At entry limit (a chip only shows when someone fits it). Turn a chip on to include those swimmers.
  5. Not included chooses what happens to the swimmers your filters leave out. Hide hides them. Cross out lists them crossed out under Not included, with the reason.
  6. On a mixed relay each swimmer shows Girl or Boy, and Advanced options adds All, Girls and Boys.

Place swimmers on legs

  1. Drag a swimmer from the list onto a leg. Or click the swimmer to pick them up, then click a leg. A bar at the bottom shows who you are holding, with Take off relay (for a swimmer on a relay) and Cancel. Escape also cancels.
  2. While you hold a swimmer, every leg shows how that relay’s time would change if you put them there. Green is faster, red is slower, and Best marks the biggest gain. On a relay with no time, a leg shows the swimmer’s time for that leg.
  3. Drop a swimmer on a filled leg to swap the two. Moves work between relays too.
  4. To take a swimmer off, drag them back onto the list, or pick them up and click Take off relay.
  5. Or start from the relay: click an empty leg, then click swimmers in the list. A note says which leg you are choosing, and the open legs fill in order.

A picked-up swimmer: legs on the A relay show +0.00, legs on the B relay show green time drops with Best −2.98 on the 4th leg, and the bar at the bottom offers Take off relay and Cancel

Swimmers who ask before they’re added

Placing a swimmer who isn’t ready to swim asks first. Cancel leaves the relay as it was.

  • No response: “Name hasn’t committed”. Commit and add commits them to the meet and puts them on the relay.
  • Other session: “Not committed to session”. Add anyway adds them.
  • Declined: “Name declined this meet”. Add anyway adds them.
  • At entry limit: “Name is at the entry limit”. Add anyway adds them past the limit.

Use the Grid view

  1. Click Grid at the top for one row per relay, with the legs, Alternates, Seed, Heat and Lane across.
  2. Arrow keys and Tab move around the grid.
  3. Type a name in a leg to get a short list of matching swimmers, with their time for that leg and how much they would change the relay. Up and down arrows choose, and Enter places the swimmer. Crossed-out names aren’t ready to swim and ask first.
  4. Space picks up the swimmer in a cell. Move to another leg and press Space again to drop them there.
  5. Delete clears a cell.
  6. In Seed, Heat or Lane, type a value and press Enter.
  7. Clicking a swimmer in the list fills the highlighted leg and moves to the next one.
  8. In the Grid view, or on a smaller screen, the event list folds into an Events button with arrows beside the event name. The [ and ] keys also step between events.

Seeds, heats, lanes and alternates

  1. Each relay card shows its projected time. Every relay after the fastest shows how far behind it is, such as +12.75.
  2. Seed follows the projected time and says Projected. Click it to type your own seed, which then says Manual. Use projected goes back. A projected seed stays up to date when best times or the time settings change.
  3. Click Heat or Lane and type a number.
  4. Once all four legs are set, + Alternate appears. Click it and pick a swimmer, or click Make alternate while you hold one. A relay can have up to four alternates.
  5. The … menu on a relay has Clear swimmers and Remove A relay. Add C relay (the next letter) adds an empty relay.

Choose how times are counted

  1. Click the stopwatch button next to Auto-fill. It reads Flat starts until you turn on relay splits.
  2. By default the builder uses flat-start times. For legs 2 to 4 it takes the flying start off, because those swimmers start from a takeoff.
  3. Tick Use relay splits to also use times swum on relays. The flying start is added back to those so they compare fairly with flat starts. The button then reads Flat + relay splits, and a relay split shows a small R by the time.
  4. Flying start is worth sets that amount. It starts at 0.40s. Use − and + or click a preset from 0.20 to 0.70.
  5. These settings are saved for the meet, so every coach and device gets the same seeds.

Auto-fill in one step

  1. Click Auto-fill.
  2. Relays: pick how many, from A to A–D, or More for up to A–L.
  3. Build: Fastest first (A is your fastest relay, then B, then C), Balanced (relays as even as possible) or Fill empty legs (keep everyone placed and fill the open legs).
  4. Swimmers: This session (committed to this session), Whole meet (adds swimmers committed to other sessions) or Everyone invited (adds swimmers who haven’t answered). Each shows a count. When the event has swim-ups, Include swim-ups adds them. Swimmers at their entry limit are left out.
  5. Times sums up the time settings in use.
  6. Preview shows each relay’s swimmers, its projected time and how it compares with what’s entered now. Nothing changes until you click the blue button, such as Fill A–C (or Fill empty legs).
  7. Notes under the preview tell you when the fill replaces the event’s relays (you can undo it), when swimmers who haven’t answered will be committed, and when too few swimmers fit to fill every leg.

Advanced auto-fill: see and change every time

  1. In Auto-fill, click Advanced. The builder turns into a full auto-fill page: settings on the left, Times being used in the middle and Result on the right.
  2. The left panel has the same choices, plus every time setting. Use 50 splits from 100s (for a relay with 100 legs, Use 100 splits from 200s) also uses each swimmer’s fastest opening split from an individual swim twice the leg distance. Those times show a small S.
  3. Times being used lists the swimmers auto-fill considers, with a count. Switch to Everyone to see the rest, or search a name. Tick or untick a swimmer to include or skip them.
  4. A medley relay has one column per stroke. A free relay shows Using (the time auto-fill uses), then the flat time, the relay split, the split from a longer swim when that option is on, and the longer swim itself.
  5. Click a time to see the times on file for it in the bar below, with the meet and date. Click one to use it instead.
  6. To type your own time, select a cell and type the digits: 3145 is 31.45, and 28 is 28.00. Enter saves and moves down. Tab saves and moves right. Esc cancels. Delete goes back to the best time. Space includes or skips the swimmer.
  7. Your own time wins over every recorded time and shows a small M. Your times are saved on this computer for this meet only, and the page says Saved on this device. Clear your times removes them after asking.
  8. Result shows each relay, leg by leg, and how it compares with what’s entered now. Click the blue button, such as Fill A–C, to apply it. Cancel, Relays at the top, or Esc goes back to the builder.

Advanced auto-fill: settings on the left with Use 50 splits from 100s ticked, the Times being used grid with a typed 43.00 marked M, the time choices for that swimmer below, and the Result panel with three relays

Undo a change

  1. A message appears after each change, such as “Removed B relay”, with an Undo button.
  2. Undo at the top of the builder steps back one change at a time. Ctrl+Z on Windows or ⌘Z on a Mac does the same.
  3. If another coach changed the event after you, Undo stops with “Someone else changed these relays, so this can’t be undone.”

Common questions

Why does a swimmer ask before being added? They aren’t ready to swim for this relay. They haven’t answered for the meet, committed to a different session, declined, or reached one of the meet’s entry limits. Commit checks with you so nobody lands on a relay by mistake. Adding one of your own swimmers who hasn’t answered commits them to the meet. A linked team’s swimmer is added without changing their answer on their team’s meet.

Do the times I type in auto-fill change the seeds? No. Your times (and 50 splits from 100s) only steer which swimmers auto-fill picks. Seeds still come from recorded times, so every coach and device saves the same seed. When they differ, Result shows the seed, such as “Seed 2:35.67 from recorded times”. To set a seed yourself, type it in the relay’s Seed.

Are my typed times shared with other coaches? No. They are saved on the computer or phone you typed them on, for that meet only.

What goes in the entry file? Each relay with its swimmers in leg order and its seed. The .hy3 also carries the heat and lane. Alternates go in as alternates. An open leg stays open, so the swimmers after it keep their legs. See manage entries and export entry files.

Will auto-fill wipe out relays I built by hand? Fastest first and Balanced replace the event’s relays. Fill empty legs keeps everyone where they are. You see a preview before anything changes, and Undo takes a fill back.

Why isn’t a swimmer in the list? They aren’t invited to the meet, don’t fit the event’s age group or gender, or your filters leave them out. Try Everyone, or turn on more chips under Advanced options. A linked team’s swimmers only show once every team has combined entries and their team has invited them.

Do alternates count toward entry limits? No. Only the four legs count.

A leg says “Swimmer not on the roster”. That swimmer isn’t on your team’s roster, for example a swimmer who left the team. Commit keeps them on the relay. Swimmers from a linked team on a combined meet show with their team’s name instead. See linked meets.

Can two coaches build relays at the same time? Yes. Each change saves on its own, so one coach’s move doesn’t undo another’s. Undo stops if someone else changed the event after you.
