Run a workout on the pool TV with the pace clock

Last updated 2026-10-29
Coaches · Training Put today's workout on a TV or tablet at the pool: a big clock that counts down each send-off, shows every subgroup's set, and beeps when it's time to go.

Before you start

  • Coaches who can edit the workout see Pace clock in the workout’s ⋮ menu.
  • Each training group has its own Pool display link. It stays the same every practice, so you can bookmark it on the pool TV.
  • Anyone with the link can watch the clock. It shows the workout’s sets and nothing else about your swimmers.

Step by step

Set up the pool TV

  1. Open the workout from Training → Workouts, click ⋮ at the top right, and choose Pace clock. The ⋮ menu in full screen has it too.

  2. Under Pool display, click Copy and open the link on the TV, tablet or laptop at the pool. No login is needed.

  3. Tap the screen once where it says Tap for sound. That turns on the beeps, keeps the screen awake and fills the screen.

  4. Back in the dialog, next to Pool display it says Pool TV connected · sound on when it’s ready. Sound turns the beeps on or off. Test beep plays a beep on the TV so you can check the volume.

  5. Once sound is on, a speaker button sits in the bottom corner of the TV. Tap it to turn the beeps off or back on. It matches the Sound switch in the dialog and stays that way for the group until you change it.

The Pace clock dialog: Start with About 41:30, Pool display with Pool TV connected · sound on and the team.commitswimming.com/clock link with Copy, the Sound switch and Test beep, Staggered starts, Start each section on the top, and the workout's lines with their times

Choose how the groups leave

  1. With two or more subgroups, Staggered starts says Everyone leaves together. Click Edit to start a subgroup :05 to :30 behind the first one.
  2. Start each section on the top (on unless you turn it off) waits for the clock to reach the top of the minute before each section starts.

Commit saves these settings for the training group, so they’re the same next practice.

Run practice

  1. Click Start. Next to it, About shows how long the workout should take. To start partway through, tap a line in the list (Tap a line to start there).

  2. The TV shows a panel for each subgroup: the rep (like Rep 3 of 8 @ 1:30), a countdown to the next send-off, and what’s Up next. On the last set of the workout, Last one! takes the place of Up next. Before a set starts, it shows Up next with a Leaves in countdown.

The pool TV during a set: Round 1 of 3, 200 kick @ ~4:00 with a Swim tag and a 3:21 countdown, Today's sets on the right with 200 kick highlighted, and Up next 8 x 100s IMO in 15:21

  3. On every send-off the TV plays three short beeps and one long one.

  4. Use the controls in the dialog while you coach:

    • Pause and Resume stop and restart the clock.
    • Back restarts the set, or goes to the one before if you’re less than 5 seconds in.
    • Next set skips ahead. While a set is counting down to its start, Go in 10 takes its place and starts that set in 10 seconds.
    • Tap any line (Tap a line to jump there) to move to it.
    • When the last set has finished, Start over goes back to the first set.
  5. When the last set finishes, the TV shows That’s a wrap! for 10 minutes, then goes back to a plain clock. To stop early, click End workout and then End. The TV goes straight back to the plain clock.

How it reads the workout

  • The pace clock uses the send-offs Commit reads in your sets. A set without a send-off gets an estimated pace, shown with a ~.
  • When subgroups swim different sets, each one gets its own panel. A workout with no splits shows one panel, Everyone.
  • When the groups split up, the next shared set waits for the slowest group.
  • Up to 20 groups fit on the TV.
  • Change a set while the clock is running and the change shows the next time you start.

Common questions

The TV doesn’t beep. Tap the TV screen once. Browsers only play sound after a tap. The dialog says Pool TV connected · tap it for sound until you do. If it says Pool TV connected · sound off, turn Sound back on in the dialog or tap the speaker button on the TV.

Can two workouts run at once? One per training group. Starting another workout for the same group asks Swap workouts? first.

The Wi-Fi at the pool dropped. The TV keeps counting from its own clock and catches up when it reconnects.

Can swimmers see the link? Yes, anyone with it can open the clock. The link never changes, so only share it where you want the clock shown.
