Set up training groups and subgroups

Groups vs subgroups

A training group is a practice: everyone in the water at the same time. A subgroup is a split inside that practice: the sprinters doing one main set while distance does another. If your whole group always swims the same thing, you don’t need subgroups at all. Add them when your workouts start saying “sprinters do this, distance does that.”

Step by step

  1. Open Training → Groups and click New Group. Name it the way you talk about it on deck.
  2. Open the group and add Subgroups for its splits. Keep them few and real. Two or three subgroups you actually use beat six you don’t.
  3. Use Add yourself on the groups you coach, so they surface first when you write workouts.
  4. Each group also carries its own vocabulary: Intensities, Strokes, Types, Courses, Equipment. The defaults are fine to start. You’ll tune intensities later, and Copy settings moves one group’s setup onto another.
  5. That’s enough structure to write your first workout. Athletes get added when you’re ready for attendance and swimmer data.

Common questions

How many groups should we have? One per distinct practice. If Gold and Silver never swim together, they’re two groups. If they share a pool and a whiteboard, consider one group with two subgroups.

Can a coach manage only their own groups? Yes. Coaches are attached per group, and the Groups page filters by Mine.

We got the structure wrong. Groups can be renamed, archived, and reorganized any time without losing workout history.
