Test sets: record and track test results

Last updated 2026-10-27
Coaches · Training Build a library of test sets, record each swimmer's reps on test dates from a computer or a phone, and follow the results in the Season view, the Test Sets report and each swimmer's profile.

Before you start

  • Coaches with training access can build test sets and type times. Staff who can only view training see everything but can’t change it.
  • Test sets belong to your whole club. Any training group can use one, and you can tag the groups that usually do.
  • Times link to swimmers on your roster. A test date linked to a workout uses that workout’s attendance, so take attendance first if you can.

Step by step

Build a test set

  1. Go to Training → Test sets and click New test set.

  2. Give it a Name and type The set the way you’d write it in a workout, like 10 x 100 free @ 1:45 best average. Commit fills in Reps and Distance per rep from the set. Change them if it got them wrong.

  3. Under Record, pick what you’ll write down:

    • A time per rep: one box per rep. Leave a box empty if a rep was missed.
    • One time: one box per swimmer, like a 400 for time.
    • Distance in a set time: one box per swimmer, in yards or meters, like a T30.
  4. Under Score by, pick the number that sums up a swimmer’s set: Average, Best rep, Total, Last rep or Fade (last rep minus first rep, so a smaller fade is better). This shows when the set has more than one box.

  5. Pick the Course (SCY, SCM or LCM) and, if you like, the Groups that use it (optional). Left empty, it’s for any group.

  6. Add Instructions (like “Same warm-up every time. Push off, no dives.”) and Coach notes (coaches only). Families can see the instructions. Coach notes stay with coaches.

  7. Click Create test set. Its page opens.

The New test set form with Name, The set, Record set to A time per rep, 10 reps of 100, Score by Average, Course SCY, a group picked and Instructions

Change, copy or archive a test set

  • Click Edit set on the test set’s page. The name, score, course, groups, instructions and notes can change any time.
  • Once a test set has times, what’s recorded, the reps and the distance lock. That keeps old results meaning the same thing. To change them, click ⋯ → Duplicate and edit the copy.
  • ⋯ → Archive hides a test set from the library and the workout picker. Its results stay. Click Archived in the library to see archived sets and Restore one. In the library you can also hover a row for Duplicate and Archive.

Add a test date

  1. Open the test set and click New test date.

  2. Pick the Date and the Group.

  3. Under Workout, Commit lists that group’s workouts on that day. Pick one to start from its attendance, or pick Don’t link a workout to start with everyone in the group. Without a workout you can narrow it to Subgroups.

  4. Click Start entering times.

The New test date window with a date, the Bronze group, the Speed Day workout picked and marked uses its attendance, and Don't link a workout below it

Type times in the Sheet

The Sheet tab has a row per swimmer and a box per rep, with the score and the fade on the right. Test dates are listed on the left, newest first. A link icon means the date is linked to a workout, and Open the workout takes you there.

  1. Click the first box and type the time.
  2. Press Enter or Space to save it and move on. Across → moves to the next rep. Down ↓ moves to the next swimmer.
  3. Shift+Enter goes back a box. The arrow keys move around. Esc clears what you typed in the box.
  4. To clear a saved time, click its box and press Backspace.
  5. The count at the top (like 12 of 13 done) shows how many swimmers have every rep in.

The Sheet for a 10 x 100 test: the test date on the left, a row of ten rep times for each swimmer, 12 of 13 done, Across and Down, and a 22.50 rep flagged in yellow

When there’s an earlier test date, a column like vs Sep 24 shows each swimmer’s change and a PB tag. To delete a test date and every time on it, click ⋯ → Delete test date. On a date that isn’t linked to a workout, hover a swimmer with no times and click the X to take them off.

How Commit reads what you type

  • Type digits only and you can skip the colon and period:
    • One or two digits are seconds: 42 is 42.
    • Three digits are minutes and seconds up to 259 (2:59). Above that they’re seconds and tenths: 315 is 31.5.
    • Four digits are seconds and hundredths: 5912 is 59.12.
    • Five or more are minutes, seconds and hundredths: 10215 is 1:02.15.
    • If that reading can’t be right for the rep distance, Commit uses one that fits. For a 100, 1053 reads as 1:05.3.
  • Type a colon or a period and Commit reads it as written, like 1:02.15. On a keypad with no period, 1:0215 also reads as 1:02.15.
  • If no reading looks right for the distance, the time still saves but the box turns yellow. Hover it to see why, then retype it if it’s wrong. In the picture above, 22.50 for a 100 is flagged.
  • If Commit can’t read it at all, the box turns red and nothing saves.
  • For Distance in a set time, type the distance, like 1650.

Focus: one swimmer at a time

Click Focus for a big entry screen. The swimmers are listed on the left with a check once they’re done. Type a time or tap the keypad, and Commit shows how it reads it (like Reads as 1:19.40). Press Enter or click Next rep. Clicking away saves what you typed too. After the last rep, Save · next swimmer moves on. When the swimmer has an earlier test, a small chart compares today’s reps with last time.

Swimmers marked absent

On a test date linked to a workout, the Sheet lists the swimmers marked present. Everyone else in the group sits under Not at practice. Click it to open the list.

If you type a time for someone marked absent, the time saves and Commit asks once whether to mark them present. Mark present updates the workout’s attendance. Keep absent leaves it alone. You’re only asked once per swimmer on each test date.

The absent question in the workout's Test set tab: Grant Torp is marked absent for the Thu, Oct 15 practice. The time is saved. Mark Grant present too? with Keep absent and Mark present

The Season view

The Season tab puts the whole season on one page. There’s a row per swimmer and a column per test date, with the group average under each date. Each score shows the change since the swimmer’s last test, green when they improved, and a PB tag for a personal best. The Trend column draws a small line and the season change.

  • The tiles at the top show the latest Group average with its change, the Season change and PBs on the latest date.
  • Switch the score (Average, Best rep, Total, Last rep, Fade) to look at the results another way. This doesn’t change the test set.
  • When more than one group swam it, pick a group from the list.
  • Click a date to open it in the Sheet.

The Season view for Bronze: Group average 1:19.37 on Oct 15, Season change −0.69, 11 PBs, and a row per swimmer with their Sep 24 and Oct 15 averages, PB tags and trend lines

Use a test set inside a workout

  1. Open the workout and click in the text where the set goes.

  2. Click Test set under the editor, next to Set check. Or open the Test set tab next to Stats, Attendance and Notes.

  3. Search for a test set and click it. Sets tagged for this group come first. To make a new one, click New test set.

  4. Leave Add the set to the workout text checked to add the set at your cursor. Commit makes the test date for this workout, with the swimmers from its attendance.

The Test set tab in a workout with no test set: search, the Support doc 10 x 100 test, Add the set to the workout text checked, and New test set

  5. After the swims, type each rep in the tab. Enter, Tab or clicking away saves it, and Esc drops what you typed. After the last rep, Enter moves to the next swimmer. Click a time to retype it. Press Backspace in an empty box to clear the last rep.

  6. The set’s lines in the workout get a blue band with a button showing how many swimmers are entered and Enter times. Click it to jump to the tab.

  • Open test set page opens this test date in the Sheet.
  • Click ⋯ → Add another test set to use more than one. A list at the top of the tab switches between them.
  • Click ⋯ → Remove from this workout to unlink it. The test date and every time stay on the test set’s page.
  • In full screen, Test set is in the dock on the right.
  • In an older plain-text workout, the test date is made but the set isn’t added to the text. Type it in yourself.

The Test Sets report

  1. Open Reports and click Test Sets under Training Analytics.
  2. Pick the test set. Narrow it by Dates, by group (when more than one group swam it), by subgroup and by score.
  3. Read the tiles: Group average with the change vs the last test, Improved since their last test, Season change and Most improved.
  4. Pick a view:
    • Progression: the group average in blue and everyone else in gray. Under Highlight swimmers, pick up to 2 swimmers to color.
    • Distribution: every swimmer on every date, plus the median.
    • Rep pacing: the group average for each rep on the last 3 dates.
    • Table: each swimmer’s score per date and their season change.

On every chart, up is better: Faster ↑ for times, Farther ↑ for distance.

A swimmer’s results

Open the swimmer from People → Roster and click Test sets. Each test set they’ve swum has a card with the latest score, the change, a PB tag and a small trend line. Click a card for a chart over time (with the group average for coaches) and a table of every rep on every date.

What families see

Swimmers and parents get a Test sets tab on their own swimmer’s profile, on the web and in the app. It shows the same cards, chart and rep-by-rep table, with a few differences:

  • They only ever see their own swimmer’s results. There’s no group average and no other swimmers.
  • They see the set and its instructions. Coach notes are never shown to families.
  • The tab only shows when your club lets them see workout history. That’s Own swimmer(s) workout history under Settings → Advanced → Parent and Athlete Controls, in the Parents can see and Athletes can see lists. See control what parents see.

Common questions

Why can’t I change the reps or what’s recorded? The test set has times, so those settings are locked to keep old results accurate. Click ⋯ → Duplicate and change the copy.

A time turned yellow. Is it wrong? Maybe. It doesn’t look like a believable time for the rep distance, often a missing digit. It still saves and counts, so check it and retype it if needed.

A swimmer missed a rep. What do I do? Leave that box empty. Average, best rep and last rep use the reps they swam. Total needs every rep.

Can two coaches type times at once? Yes. Each rep saves on its own, so one coach can take the Sheet while another uses Focus on a phone.

I don’t see the Test set tab in a workout. It only shows to coaches, on workouts for a training group that’s part of your team in Commit.

Does removing a test set from a workout delete the times? No. The test date and its times stay on the test set’s page. To delete them, open the date in the Sheet and click ⋯ → Delete test date.

Can parents see other swimmers’ results? No. Families only see their own swimmer, and only when your club shows workout history.
